We interview illustrators and authors working in children’s picture books and include collections of our favorite books in special categories.
Maira Kalman
In a unique approach to the traditional alphabet book, Kalman uses “31 Objects from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum” to creatively introduce the letters, each with a sentence or phrase (most are humorous) for context. Her illustrations and hand-drawn text add to the familiar feel—like talking with a dear friend.
